Get to grips with the basics of bagmaking and using an industrial sewing machine with Laura at Fernweh UK.
This workshop offers a unique opportunity to learn the fundamentals of bagmaking whilst tackling several technical skills, and leaving with your very own tote bag – a chance to make your very own “Morven” tote bag, Fernweh’s first ever sewing pattern and one of Laura’s bestselling Fernweh designs.
You'll get a chance to work with one of our three industrial sewing machines to craft your tote, and have a choice from Laura’s range of deadstock waxed cotton and denims, to create a sturdy tote bag ready for any adventure.
What You’ll Learn:
- Introduction to Industrial Sewing Machines - You'll get time to get comfortable with one of my three industrial sewing machines, getting your tension correct and threading up a bobbin and machine
· Pattern Cutting - we'll go over how best to minimise waste using lay plans and grainlines, and using a commercial pattern
· Bagmaking Basics – We’ll go through different ways to add structure to your bag, including different types of interfacing
· - Sewing Techniques such as adding pockets, boxing corners, sewing a zip and how to line a bag to get a professional finish
· How to sew with mid-heavyweight fabrics such as denim and waxed cotton.
· -Topstitching - We'll finish with topstitching our apron to create a professional finish
· Adding a magnetic snap
· How to add webbing straps
You'll leave the workshop with a fully crafted tote bag, ready for any adventure life takes you on!
You’ll also leave with a copy of our “Morven” Tote Pattern, and handouts for your reference at a later date.
All materials and tools are provided, but if you'd prefer to bring your own fabric, or have fabric you'd like to repurpose, you are more than welcome! Simply contact us in advance to check for fabric suitability and minimum size requirements

About Your Tutor
Laura from Fernweh UK has been crafting waxed canvas bags and leather accessories under her slow fashion brand Fernweh since 2014. She has a BA Hons in Fashion Design and has 15 years experience in pattern cutting, garment construction and finishing, utilising industrial sewing machines and 10 years of bagmaking and leathercraft.
